Cloud estate: the public bucket and the over-trusted role
A configuration and privilege review of a growing AWS estate that found a data-exposure path and an escalation to account-wide access.
Tools used
- Prowler
- ScoutSuite
- Pacu
- AWS CLI
- Python
The problem
A SaaS startup had grown its AWS footprint faster than its guardrails and wanted a point-in-time review before a funding due-diligence process.
The approach
Read-only review with Prowler and ScoutSuite for the wide sweep, then manual investigation of the interesting findings. The standout was a misconfigured S3 bucket exposing customer exports, and an over-permissive IAM role that a compromised service could use to escalate to administrator.
The outcome
Delivered a prioritised remediation plan grouped by effort and impact. The exposed bucket was locked down within hours of the readout, and the IAM findings fed into a least-privilege rework that I reviewed before due diligence.
Context
The estate spanned three AWS accounts with a mix of managed services and self-hosted workloads. The review was time-boxed to a week.
Key findings
A customer-export bucket had a public policy left over from an early prototype. Separately, a service role carried a wildcard permission that allowed privilege escalation to administrator. Neither was being actively exploited, but both were trivially reachable.
Outcome
The urgent exposure was fixed immediately. The IAM cleanup became a longer project, and the startup passed its security due diligence without findings in this area.
